About the Skete
St. John's is a dependency of Holy
Name Abbey, W. Milford, NJ
St. John’s is a small skete within
the Milan Synod. (A skete is a small monastic settlement, affiliated
with a monastery or abbey.) It is dedicated to and under the protection
of St. John Maximovitch of San Francisco.
Our work involves prayer - both
Western and Byzantine Rites. Our simple chapel is the heart of the
skete and the celebration of the Eucharist (Divine Liturgy) gives us
our strength and purpose.
Also, St. John sponsors a teaching
ministry, a very active affiliation with the local county jail - which
houses over 600 inmates - and does publishing work such as “The
Orthodox Experience” -an Archdiocesan publication, along with major
works
published/distributed by Light and Life and Regina Orthodox Press. W
also have a very large collection of Western Rite materials in our
library.
At the present time there is one monk
and an oblate following the Rule of St. Benedict.
